En examinant les chiffres donnés par Worldometer depuis le 31 décembre 2019, début officiel de la crise du Covid 19 en Chine, j’ai constaté que le nombre de morts dues au virus n’était jamais mis en perspective par rapport au nombre de morts de causes différentes. Il existe une page entièrement dédiée au COVID-19. Sur cette page ne figurent que trois chiffres (nombre de cas, nombre de décès, nombre de malades ayant recouvré la santé) et quatre graphes (cas actifs, cas inactifs, morts par jour, nouveaux cas par jour). Au 17 janvier 2021, Worldometer m’informe que, sur une population mondiale actuelle de 7 839 637 700 (arrondi à l’inférieure) : 95 067 241 personnes ont été infectées par le COVID 19 depuis le 31 décembre 2019. 2 031 875 personnes dans le monde sont mortes du COVID 19 depuis le 31 décembre 2019. Les chiffres relatifs aux autres causes majeures de décès dans le monde sont accessibles dans la catégorie « santé » d’une autre page, où l’on trouve également pêle-mêle des données statistiques concernant la politique, l’environnement, l’énergie, etc. Parmi les chiffres disponibles concernant les causes de mortalité dans le monde hors COVID-19 depuis le début de cette année, soit dix-sept jours, on trouve aussi, entre autres : 37 839 personnes mortes à cause de l’eau polluée, la seule à laquelle ils ont accès, depuis le 1er janvier 2021. 224 625 personnes mortes de maladie directement causée par le tabac depuis le 1er janvier 2021. 48 185 personnes qui se sont suicidées depuis le 1er janvier 2021. 75 542 personnes mortes du SIDA depuis le 1er janvier 2021. Enfin on découvre un chiffre qui glace le sang : 502 433 personnes sont mortes de faim depuis le premier jour de cette nouvelle année. Sur Worldometer, un compteur affiche en temps réel l’augmentation du nombre de morts: le temps pour moi d’écrire ces mots, nous voici déjà à 502 451. Ces chiffres incontestables proviennent de l’OMS, de l’United Nations World Food Programme et de l’UNICEF. Si on clique sur les liens vers ces organismes prestigieux, on peut remonter dans le passé, en fouillant dans leurs archives. Alors on trouve des informations curieuses, qui nous obligent à nous poser des questions. En 2005 par exemple, pic de l’épidémie de SIDA selon ONUSIDA, 1,9 million de personnes sont morts de cette maladie infectieuse, qui fut un jour qualifiée de « nouvelle peste du 20è siècle ». Le monde s’est-il arrêté pour autant en 2005 ? Le « Center for Disease Control and Prevention » du gouvernement des Etats-Unis affirme également que depuis des décennies, 7 millions de personnes en moyenne meurent chaque année de maladies causées par le tabac. L’industrie du tabac a-t-elle été jamais interdite pour autant? Les enfants de parents fumeurs ont-ils dû porter des masques filtrants pour les protéger des ravages du tabagisme passif ? Concrètement, une solution concertée vigoureuse et efficace a-t-elle été jamais mise en place au niveau international pour nourrir les affamés et permettre l’accès à l’eau potable au plus grand nombre ? Force est de constater que non : les gouvernants de notre planète semblent incapable d’agir à l’unisson pour combattre ces fléaux dévastateurs.
